END-OF-LIFE CARE

Gentle support when the time comes
Gentle support when the time comes

Saying goodbye to a much-loved pet is one of the hardest parts of sharing your life with them.

At Latrobe Vets, our role is to help you make that decision with as much clarity, compassion and support as possible, and to make your pet’s final moments calm, comfortable and dignified.

There is no expectation that you should already know when the time is right. Sometimes the most helpful first step is simply having a conversation.

HOW DO I KNOW WHEN IT MAY BE TIME?

Quality of life is different for every pet.

Sometimes there are treatments or changes we can make to improve comfort. At other times, the kindest decision may be to prevent further suffering.

We will talk honestly with you about what we are seeing and help you understand the options, without rushing you into a decision.

Your vet can help you look at things such as:
Pain and comfort
Appetite and drinking
Mobility
Breathing
Toileting
Sleep
Interaction with the family
Whether your pet is still enjoying the things that normally make them happy
Euthanasia

WHAT HAPPENS DURING EUTHANASIA?

We will explain the process before anything happens and give you time to ask questions.

Our focus is on keeping your pet as relaxed and comfortable as possible and allowing you the time and privacy you need to say goodbye.

The team is also working towards creating an even more dedicated, peaceful space for these appointments, because the environment matters too. They want this to feel separate from an ordinary veterinary visit and as calm as possible for both pets and their families.

YOU DON’T HAVE TO MAKE THE DECISION ALONE

We are here to help families feel comfortable with the decisions they make at this stage of their pet’s life.

If you are wondering whether your pet is still comfortable, whether treatment is helping, or whether it may be time to start thinking about saying goodbye, please talk to us.

Sometimes that conversation brings reassurance.

Sometimes it helps make a difficult decision a little clearer.

Either way, we are here to support you and your pet through it.
